The Department of Agronomy represents a science discipline in support of a range of key agricultural sectors, including cereal and oilseed crops, pastures, vegetables, hydroponics, and crops under protection. New advances in relation to intensive crop systems and precision farming technologies also fall within the ambit of Agronomy. Duties: • Conducting an active and productive research programme within hydroponics and intensive (greenhouse) and extensive cultivation of vegetables and berries, and publishing such research in relevant peer-reviewed journals; • Undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in compliance with the general teaching focus of the Department; • Developing and evaluating course material; • Sourcing and managing external research funds; • Supervising postgraduate students; • Developing national and international research and industry partnerships and networks; • Involvement with community or industry interaction projects; • Involvement with administrative service delivery at departmental, Faculty and University level; • Responsible for managing vegetable production from greenhouses. Requirements: • PhD in Agronomy or a crop science related applied field; • Experience of current commercial vegetable production systems that compliments the departmental research profile; • Experience in hydroponics and intensive (greenhouse) and extensive cultivation of vegetable crops; • Relevant peer-reviewed research publications commensurate with the level of appointment; • Proven supervision or line management of students or staff; • The ability and proficiency to obtain external research funding commensurate with the level of appointment; • Strong verbal communication skills and proficiency in computer related software to support teaching, learning and research; • Relevant experience in industry-related, applied research; • Developed relationships with the agricultural industry; • Language proficiency for meeting the requirements of a multilingual university. Recommendations: • An NRF rating or equivalent; • Recognition within the field or discipline on a national and / or international level; • Relevant proficiency in statistics; • Sound interpersonal skills.
